BIO OF JANICE PERKINS

Janice Perkins

Janice was born in DeKalb and grew up on farms in northern Illinois. She graduated from Winnebago High School and the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in Business Education. Janice is married to Peter Perkins, a native of Marengo. They have three grown children and nine grandchildren. She has done some substitute teaching, worked as Cortland correspondent for the DeKalb Chronicle, worked at Perkins Oil, and worked as a cost analyst at Arnold Engineering for 13 years before "retiring" to do volunteer work.

Since moving back to Illinois and Marengo in 1976, Janice has been active in the Marengo United Methodist Church, serving on all committees at one time or another as chairman or member. She also served as the church treasurer. For 17 years she worked with the AFS/USA student exchange group as host parent and/or counselor. Since retiring, she has become more active in the Marengo Woman's Club, and has held chairmanships and offices including being its president and holding District 4 offices (president twice) and chairmanships and GFWC Illinois positions.

In January 1992 she began volunteering at the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry and was soon asked to be co-director. In 1995 she started the Holiday Clearing House. The purpose is to better use community resources during the holiday season in the Marengo/Union area. This concept now encompasses Marengo's Angel Tree, Lutheran Love Project, Toys for Tots, H.O.S.A.'s Thanksgiving Project, and several other segments. Her early dreams of better facilities and programs are progressing with the current Marengo area OutReach Enterprises.
